In the forthcoming five-match Test series in England, Virat Kohli is allegedly interested in captaining the Indian National Cricket Team. But since the BCCI and Indian selectors are adamant on developing a young player like Shubman Gill, they would not give in to the "senior player's" wish.

The future of Rohit Sharma as India's Test captain is a topic of increasing discussion. Although it hasn't been announced yet, Rohit has expressed interest in captaining the squad during the England visit.

In the second week of May 2025, the Indian selection committee, under the direction of Ajit Agarkar, is anticipated to choose the team for the England tour.

Who will captain the India National Cricket Team in the forthcoming five-match series in England, however, is now one of the most talked-about topics. During the Australia tour, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah served as captain and vice-captain, but they might not be involved this time.

Virat Kohli wants to be India's captain again; BCCI wants Shubman Gill

Jasprit Bumrah has recently recovered from a back injury he suffered in Australia, which prevented him from winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, while Rohit Sharma's status as Test captain is still in doubt due to his subpar performances against Australia and New Zealand as captain and player.

Sensing that there would be a leadership void, another senior player expressed interest in assuming the captaincy, according to the Times of India.

Since the BCCI is currently concentrating on training a younger player to eventually assume the job, they did not take this proposal into consideration.

Shubman Gill is at the forefront of the BCCI's apparent desire to assemble a team for the future. The older player, who was already captain of India, reportedly showed interest in leading his country on the England tour but was not given the go-ahead.

Gautam Gambhir doesn’t want any stop-gap solutions; Virat Kohli’s captaincy in doubt

After Bumrah was declared out of the game, Virat Kohli led India in the final Test at the SCG. He might be either Bumrah or Virat Kohli, as the sources did not disclose his name, but the Indian think tank is examining the young player in order to develop him for the future.

“A new WTC cycle is starting. The future and continuity have to be kept in mind as far as the team is concerned. Even coach Gautam Gambhir would want a set of players he is likely to work with for an extended period."

"There can't be any stopgap solutions for such an important series. The last two Test series haven't been ideal for the team, and the England series is very crucial,” the Times of India report stated.

Shubman Gill is the frontrunner to lead

According to reports, Shubman Gill is currently being considered by the BCCI as a potential leader. He currently serves as vice captain for both the ODI and T20I teams, and he might soon be assigned to the Test squad as well.

On June 20, the cricket world will see the selection of a new Test captain for India when the first Test match in England gets underway.
