Virat Kohli’s red-ball future for the Indian team in the Test format has been put on notice by the BCCI. This comes after Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket ahead of the upcoming Test tour of England, where India will play five Tests starting June 20.

In Test cricket, the 36-year-old batsman has enjoyed a stellar career. He has scored 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85 in 123 games for India, with 30 hundreds and 31 fifties.

Virat hasn't played well in Test cricket lately. The right-handed batsman has amassed 190 runs at an average of 23.75 across nine innings, including a century in the 2024–2025 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). He also had poor performances at home against New Zealand and Bangladesh.

BCCI gives Virat Kohli an ultimatum on his Test career

According to reports, the BCCI has chosen to give Kohli one last chance to establish himself in Test cricket.

Discussions over Kohli's future in the longest format were held, according to News24 Deputy Sports Editor Vaibhav Bhola, and the seasoned batter will play in the forthcoming Test series against England.

"❗️ Big Breaking News ❗️ Yes There Were Talks On Virat Kohli’s Test Career As Well. But BCCI Has Given Him One Last Chance In Test Series Against England. Top Decision Maker Has Made Up His Mind. Virat Kohli Will Play In 5 Match England Test Series. Thank You 🙏🏻," Bhola wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Kohli reformed India's Test cricket

As a captain, Kohli led India in 68 Tests, securing 40 wins, 17 losses, and 11 draws, with a win percentage of 58.82. He scored 5,864 runs as captain at an average of 54.80, with 20 centuries and 18 fifties.

Given that he hasn't been playing at his best for India since 2021, the forthcoming five-match Test series against England is vital for Kohli. His future in Test cricket may be called into doubt, and he may decide to retire if he has a bad series.

Virat Kohli is killing it in IPL 2025

Virat is presently participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Kohli's batsmanship has been amazing.

With a remarkable average of 63.12 and a strike rate of 143.46, he has amassed 505 runs from 11 games, including seven half-centuries. His highest score was 73 against the Punjab Kings.

Kohli's next game is scheduled on Friday, May 9 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
