The former Indian opening batters Navjot Singh Sidhu and Virender Sehwag have offered an unfiltered reaction to the controversial dismissals of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s wicket-keeper batter, Ishan Kishan, against the Mumbai Indians at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
Sunrisers suffered their sixth defeat in eight group-stage encounters with a struggling net run rate of -1.361 to stay in the ninth position in the points table.
Ishan Kishan's controversial dismissal
Sunrisers were struggling at 9/1 in the first two overs after being put into bat first by the opponent leader, Hardik Pandya. On the first ball of the third over, Deepak Chahar bowled a tame length delivery on the leg stump as Ishan Kishan used his bat in an attempt to get a boundary in the fine-leg region.

But he missed, and the wicketkeeper, Ryan Rickelton, grabbed the ball simply and was about to throw it back to the fielder. Chahar was running back to his mark while the umpire just started to stretch his hands to signal a wide.
However, Hardik signed at the bowler and all the fielders that Ishan Kishan was going back to the dressing room. The Patna-born, on one run in four deliveries, took a few steps towards the dressing room before getting back to the crease. But he eventually walked back as the umpire raised his finger after changing his decision from a wide.
The entire situation was bizarre and caught the eyes of everyone present on the ground, including the commentators and the fans. Later, the replays confirmed that the southpaw didn’t even get a feather on the ball.
The visuals also confirmed how the umpire Vinod Seshan was confused with the delivery and instantly changed his decision from wide to out after seeing the ball get back to the dressing room.
Hardik gave a pat on the back to Ishan Kishan for showing the ‘spirit of cricket.’ But it backfired as the 2016 champions soon found themselves five down inside the ninth over of the inning.
Navjot Singh Sidhu blames umpires for Ishan Kishan’s dismissal
Navjot Singh Sidhu blamed the umpires for his decision to signal it out despite the Mumbai players not appealing for the catch. He went to X to share his view on the entire incident.
“Buying trouble is as easy as pie, but the carrying charges run pretty high. Have you ever seen an umpire rule someone out without an appeal?” Sidhu wrote on his X handle (formerly known as Twitter).
Since Ishan Kishan’s century in the opening game of the IPL 2025, he has managed only 33 runs in seven innings at an average of around six.
Virender Sehwag tears apart Ishan Kishan’s honesty
Virender Sehwag questioned Ishan Kishan’s honesty and reminded him of the harsh truth of not getting paid for doing the role of the umpire. He called it a sheer brain-fade moment.

The former batter reckoned that Ishan should have waited for the umpire’s decision or seen if the Mumbai Indians would opt for the review, as he was not out.
“Stop at least and wait for the umpire to make his decision. He is also charging some amount of money for his job. Let him do his work. I could not understand this honesty. Had it been an edge, it would have been understandable because that would be in the spirit of the game.” Sehwag discussed this on Cricbuzz.
“It was neither out. The umpire was unsure, and you started walking off all of a sudden. Then, even the umpire is in a dilemma. Rocky Ponting used to say that my work was to bat, the umpire's work is to decide on the dismissal.” The veteran concluded.
