Wasim Jaffer, a former Indian cricketer, has shared his 16-player Indian contingent for the upcoming Test series against England before the official announcement. Jaffer chose ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah as the India national cricket team's Test skipper over Shubman Gill, who is slated to succeed Rohit Sharma.
The first game of Team India's five-match Test series versus England is scheduled for Leeds on June 20. On Saturday, May 24, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar will announce the Indian team and the new Test captain during a news conference.
India’s tour of England begins on June 20th
Following the end of IPL 2025, the Indian cricket team and head coach Gautam Gambhir are scheduled to leave for England. On June 20, the eagerly awaited five-match Test series will begin at Headingley, Leeds.
Notably, the forthcoming series marks the start of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–2027 cycle. After missing the WTC 2025 championship match, the Men in Blue will be looking to recover.
Under Rahul Dravid's leadership, India last triumphed in a Test series played in England in 2007. The team managed to secure a 2-2 draw during their most recent visit, which took place in 2021–2022.
Wasim Jaffer picked Shreyas Iyer, leaving out Sai Sudharsan in his India squad
Unexpectedly, Jaffer left out Sai Sudharsan, who has been playing well in the 2025 Indian Premier League, in favor of Abhimanyu Easwaran, the captain of the Indian A team.
Dhruv Jurel and Rishabh Pant are selected as the team's wicketkeepers. Four players who missed prior red-ball trips were included by Wasim Jaffer: Mohammed Shami, Karun Nair, Shardul Thakur, and Shreyas Iyer. Notably, Nair and Thakur were only chosen to travel to England with the India A team.
The pace-bowling all-rounder position was anticipated to be filled by Nitish Kumar Reddy, who made an impression with his batting in his first series in Australia. Additionally, he was included in the India A team.
Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav are selected as Ravindra Jadeja's backups. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj are part of the pace assault, while Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, or Akash Deep are seen to be potential backups.
