A significant incident took place just before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 encounter between the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on April 05, 2025.

It could have been a major mishap when fire broke out outside the ground just a few hours before the start of the game.

Nearly a hundred fans were standing on the road outside the ground for the LSG vs MI contest when the bushes beside the road were on fire. The video, viral on various social media platforms, claimed that a few young men deliberately set fire to the bushes.

Reports have also claimed that the fire might have been caused by a discarded cigarette. The authorities were quick enough to react and took the situation under full control without letting the fire cause any major damage. Later, the fire brigade reached the spot in time and took care of the fire before it spread further.

Mumbai Indians’ captain, Hardik Pandya, after winning the toss, decided to bowl first on the black-soil surface, expecting the dew to make a major impact in the clash. LSG got off to a fiery start in the powerplay as they added 69 runs for the loss of no wickets.

Mitchell Marsh nailed the Mumbai pacers around the park. It was a significant comeback from the Australian all-rounder, who managed a golden duck in his previous encounter at the venue a couple of days ago against the Punjab Kings.

Aiden Markram was enjoying the fiery knock from the other end, but after Marsh’s dismissal on 60 runs in 31 balls, shouldering on nine boundaries and a couple of sixes at a strike rate of 193.55, they lost the plot and struggled in the middle order.

Hardik dismissed Nicholas Pooran with a slower delivery for 12 runs in six balls before LSG captain Rishabh Pant extended his dismal form of the season with two runs in six deliveries.

After Pant’s dismissal at 107/3 in the 11th over, Mumbai expected to go through Lucknow’s lower order to dismiss them under the par score. But Ayush Badoni and David Miller put up a cracking partnership of 51 runs in 31 balls.

Badoni used his feet against the spinners to nail the big shots, while David Miller was getting the occasional boundaries to keep the scorecard moving. In the end, LSG finished with 203/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Mumbai Indians fell short despite a strong powerplay

Mumbai Indians didn’t enjoy a great opening stand even in this contest. Rohit Sharma is not playing the game due to a knee injury that he picked up during the practice session. But both Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton struggled with just five and 10 runs, respectively, in the fixture.

Naman Dhir gave them the required momentum inside the first six overs with 46 runs in 24 balls, shouldering on four boundaries and three sixes at a strike rate of 191.67. Suryakumar Yadav nailed 67 runs in 43 deliveries at a strike rate of 155.81, thanks to nine boundaries and one six.

But the LSG spinners created enough pressure on Mumbai. Tilak Varma didn’t get anything off the blade as he was retired out for 25 runs in 23 balls. However, that was too late. They fell short of the target by 12 runs.
