Pakistan’s former captain, Mohammad Hafeez, has torn apart their players from the 90s for their failure to inspire the new generation in winning ICC events. The veteran reckoned that all of the glory days started after they claimed the 2009 T20 World Cup and the 2017 Champions Trophy.

The Green Brigade, quite surprisingly, didn’t display a great performance in the Champions Trophy 2025 despite coming into the tournament with three successive victories in Australia, Zimbabwe and South Africa in the 50-over series.

Pakistan’s poor ODI form in 2025

The year 2025 hasn’t been ideal for the Pakistan side. They lost the home tri-series against New Zealand and South Africa with poor batting and bowling performances. Saim Ayub’s knee injury came as a huge blow for their balance, and once they lost Fakhar Zaman, it just exposed the entire batting department.

The defending champions of the competition began the campaign with a defeat against the Blackcaps at the National Stadium in Karachi, as they failed to chase down 321 runs thanks to Babar Azam’s slow 64-run knock that received so much criticism.

Against India, they found themselves in a do-or-die situation at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the UAE. But again, the batting unit flopped as Virat Kohli’s masterclass 100-run unbeaten knock carried them over the line in the 242-run chase. Their last game against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi was a washout fixture.

Mohammad Hafeez destroys Pakistan’s former players with this statement

Pakistan’s former spin all-rounder, Mohammad Hafeez, reckons that none of the 90s players could inspire the modern generation by winning an ICC event. He also addressed that the biggest change for the side came when they claimed the 2009 T20 World Cup.

Mohammed Hafeez looked back at the 2009 incident when their cricket went back a few steps before they brought it back by winning the 2017 Champions Trophy against India under Sarfaraz Ahmed’s leadership.

“It’s right that winning ICC trophies always inspire a country for the future among the fans and generations. I am a huge fan of the players from the 90s, but when it comes to leaving some legacies, they left nothing for Pakistan. They didn’t win any ICC events, including 1996, 1996, and 2003. We could have won a final, but we failed terribly.” Pakistan’s former captain, Mohammad Hafeez, expressed this during a live TV show.

“As a star and mega superstar, they couldn’t win an ICC event to inspire our generation. Then things changed a little. We lost the 2007 final but won in 2009 under Younus Khan’s captaincy, and that brought inspiration. Unfortunately, Pakistan’s cricket went back after the bad incident (in 2009). And we haven’t recovered from that yet.” Mohammad Hafeez addressed.

Shoaib Akhtar gives a cheeky reply to Mohammad Hafeez

All of the veterans’ comments came in the presence of Shoaib Akhtar, who is part of the 90s batch. Hafeez tore apart the former players by highlighting that winning the ICC events is not only about having talent.

“Then we won another ICC event in 2017. People idolize Babar Azam even after not having a great impact in the competition because he was present on the side. That brought the game back in this country. So with due respect to their talents, the 90s’ players couldn’t win the ICC events.” Mohammad Hafeez pointed out.

Akhtar replied cheekily by reminding him that all of the 73 ODI wins’ lead against the Indian side had come because of those 90s players.

“Hafeez has connected all of us, but the 73 ODI wins that he has got over India has come because of us (the 90s’ players).” The ‘Rawalpindi Express’ concluded.
