Due in large part to his reputation for consistently winning games for the team, MS Dhoni has become one of the most popular cricket players in the world.

Dhoni has scored 4849 runs in 145 innings at an average of 51.01 in ODIs, with two hundreds and 35 half-centuries. He became known as one of the top finishers in the world after going 50 games without losing in run chases.

Dhoni shares his mindset

The cricket player did, however, make the unexpected admission that if he thinks the team is winning easily, he doesn't bother to bat or contribute personally.

He added that winning the game as a team is the main goal of team sports and that individual accomplishments are not very important.

"I love challenges, but I don't crave them. If we are winning the match peacefully, I am not getting the batting; I'm happy. But I am talking about India. I just want India to win, I don't want the match to end in the last over."

"Who has scored the run, who has won the wicket, what's happened? I am not bothered. Our job is to win the match, and if we win the match, we can go home. That's what is important," Dhoni said on a podcast with Raj Shamani.

“If I score 30 runs in 15 balls, it’s a big contribution”- MS Dhoni

The veteran of the Chennai Super Kings, however, stated that this belief only held true when he was playing for India.

"If I get a chance, I want to contribute. It doesn't have to be a 100% contribution. It should be whatever is important for the team because I used to bat down the order. So, if I can score maybe 30 runs in 15 deliveries, it's a very big contribution. So, anything where I can contribute," the Ranchi-born added.

Regarding the 43-year-old's performance in the 2025 Indian Premier League, the CSK player has been outstanding at taking wickets, and the seasoned gloveman has displayed some lightning-fast run-outs and stumpings.

Although Dhoni's hitting hasn't been at its best, the tournament has only just begun, and he hopes to improve his batting performances to help the team captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad win their sixth trophy.

MS Dhoni rubbishes rumors about his retirement from IPL

Amid numerous retirement rumors, MS Dhoni recently spoke candidly about his future in the Indian Premier League. He disclosed that following the conclusion of the current edition, he will answer a call about the 19th edition of the prestigious tournament.

The former captain of the Chennai Super Kings further disclosed that the ultimate choice will be based on how well his body functions.

Many people in the cricket community, including fans and commentators, have criticized the five-time IPL champion for being a little too lethargic at the crease during the current campaign. It's unclear how Dhoni will react to the criticism regarding his bat-style of cricket.
