The root of the story started when the former Indian captain, Sunil Gavaskar, was on commentary during the fourth of the five-match Test series in the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, as he slammed Rishabh Pant for playing astupidshot at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

India’s wicket-keeper batter played a wrong and unnecessary shot in the first innings of the MCG contest to put the Blue Brigade under tremendous pressure. The southpaw looked to reverse scoop Scott Boland over the wicket-keeper’s head to the third man fielder grabbed a comfortable catch.

In a viral video, Rishabh has tried to recreate the epicStupid; commentary of the former World Cup-winning opener. In reply to Australia’s mammoth first-innings score of 474 runs, the blue brigade was struggling at 191/5 in the 56th over.

The wicket-keeper batter had already grabbed 28 runs in 37 balls, shouldering on three boundaries at a strike rate of 75.67, before he tried to play the reverse scoop as Nathan Lyon grabbed a simple catch. Nitish Reddy’s century helped the tourists finish on 369, but they could have rolled over to a low score in the encounter.

Gavaskar lost his cool while commenting for ABC Radio and called Rishabh Pant stupid. He suggested that the southpaw should go to the opponent’s dressing room rather than his team.

“Stupid, stupid, stupid. You’ve got two fielders there, and you still go for that. You missed the previous shot, and look where you have been caught. You have been caught at deep third man. That is throwing away your wicket.” Gavaskar expressed on air.

“Not the situation that India was in, you have to understand the situation as well. You cannot say that’s your natural game. I’m sorry. That’s not your natural game. That is letting your team down badly.” The Mumbai-born added.

Sunil Gavaskar clarifies comments calling Rishabh Pant stupid

Once the video went viral, the fans attacked the former World Cup winner. A few admitted the shot was not needed at that position. But the veteran batter later clarified his comment.

“When I see somebody as talented as Rishabh Pant play the shot, I had no problem with the first shot he played and missed. The reason I got upset was that ego took over the next ball.” Gavaskar told to ABC Sports.

“I've just been hit in the midriff for attempting a similar shot. I'm going to show the bowler who's the boss. Test cricket is not easy. When he got out, they had two fielders in the deep, and this is a big ground. It's not easy to hit sixes. You've got the fielders in catching positions over there—deep square leg and deep fine leg.” Gavaskar claimed.

He also highlighted that Pant has the ability to score the runs through the conventional shots, suggesting that he should always rely on his strengths rather than attempting the high-risk shots.
