The Lucknow Super Giants’ captain, Rishabh Pant, shared a funny moment with MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings’ captain, at the end of the game, where the former discussed Dhoni’s remarkable direct hit from behind the stumps to run out Abdul Samad at the non-strikers’ end.

Chennai ended their five-match losing streak with a nervy five-wicket victory over Lucknow at the Ekana Stadium as MS Dhoni, with their fabulous unbeaten knock, guided the side over the line to win the Player of the Match award after nearly six years.

The former CSK leader, who took over the leadership responsibilities of the season after Ruturaj Gaikwad got ruled out of the event due to an elbow injury, showed his excellent wicket-keeping skills with the gloves.

He dismissed Ayush Badoni in the first innings, but his direct hit to run Abdul Samad out was the main attraction of the evening. On the second delivery of the 19th over, the right-handed batter, who was on 20 off 10 deliveries, was late to react to Pant’s call as they looked for a single.

MS Dhoni was smart enough to target the non-striker’s end. Watching Pant being nearly the halfway mark, he tossed the ball with an underarm throw to the bowling end, and it ended up getting the bull’s eye.

“Wicket dekha mar diya lagi toh theek hai (I saw the stumps and hit it thinking it’s okay if it hits or not),” Dhoni said to Pant during the discussion.

“Lage jaa rahi hai yaar (Your throws are hitting the stumps only right),” Pant replied in the presence of their mentor and the former Indian pacer, Zaheer Khan.

Rishabh Pant carried LSG to 166/7

Lucknow didn’t make a good start in the innings as they lost Aiden Makram cheaply, thanks to a fabulous catch from Rahul Tripathi. Mitchell Marsh struggled on the surface for his 30 runs in 25 deliveries, while Nicholas Pooran was adjudged leg before the stumps on eight runs in nine balls.

The situation was getting tough when Pant, despite not being in form, played a fabulous and stable knock of 63 runs in 49 balls at a strike rate of 128.57, thanks to four boundaries and four centuries, giving the Lucknow side a good total at the end of the game.

Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad chipped in with 20+ individual runs, respectively. But MS Dhoni used his bowlers perfectly. Noor Ahmed finished with figures of 0/13 in four overs, while Kamboj finished with 1/20 in three overs.

MS Dhoni shouldered CSK over the line by five wickets

Unlike the last few games where the CSK batters didn’t play with intent, it was a better start from the new opening pair of Rachin Ravindra and debutant Shaik Rasheed as they put 59/1 inside the first six overs. But the same issue continued as their poor middle order struggled against the spinners.

MS Dhoni had a stiff task in hand. He thumped Avesh Khan through extra cover for a boundary before using his bottom hand to smoke Shardul Thakur over the midwicket fence for a huge six. A few edges flew to the boundary as Shivam Dube also nailed a few balls beyond the rope to get the side close to the winning margin.

MS Dhoni remained undefeated on 26 runs in 11 balls, thanks to four boundaries and one six, to end the side’s five-match losing streak. They are still at the bottom of the points table with a net run rate of -1.276.
