Following the team's unexpected IPL 2025 loss to the Delhi Capitals (DC), Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), was spotted having a heated discussion with Rishabh Pant. As fans were reminded of a similar incident from the previous season, the animated exchange swiftly went viral on social media.

The Lucknow Super Giants lost shockingly to the Delhi Capitals on Monday, March 24, in the fourth match of the 2025 Indian Premier League at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. The Capitals made an amazing comeback because LSG, who were in a dominant position, lost control of the game.

After winning the toss, DC chose to bat first with LSG. LSG reached 209/8 in 20 overs thanks to David Miller's 27* and seventies from Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh. When Rishabh Pant made his debut as captain of the LSG, he was taken by surprise.

DC's answer was to stumble significantly in the pursuit, dropping to 113/6 at one point. However, Ashutosh Sharma (66* in 31 balls) and Vipraj Nigam (39 in 15) then led DC to an incredible one-wicket victory.

Rishabh Pant’s captaincy comes under scrutiny

LSG's bowling strategy raised questions. The team's most seasoned bowler, Shardul Thakur, claimed two wickets in his opening over. However, he was not allowed to bowl another over. When DC required 22 from the final two overs, Rishabh Pant gave the ball to the rookie Prince Yadav.

Yadav gave up 16 runs, including a six and two fours, which helped DC gain the upper hand. For the last over, Pant backed spinner Shahbaz Ahmed. Shahbaz's outstanding delivery, which defeated DC's No. 11 Mohit Sharma, gave LSG a chance. Pant, though, was unable to cleanly gather the ball.

Sanjiv Goenka scolds Rishabh Pant in presence of coach Justin Langer

At the mega auction, Pant was acquired by LSG for an unprecedented ₹27 crore. In IPL history, he became the most costly player. As a hitter and captain, Pant had a lackluster debut. In a game where more than 420 runs were scored and five batters had strike rates above 200, he was removed for a six-ball duck.

Sanjiv Goenka chatted with coach Justin Langer and Rishabh Pant following the loss. Notably, following a humiliating loss to SRH in 2024, Goenka had a heated argument with then-captain KL Rahul. Rahul's eventual departure from the franchise was reportedly influenced by that altercation.
