Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, two veterans of Indian cricket, have again entered the record books after claiming their second Champions Trophy title in 2025. This was their second ICC trophy in just nine months, as they enjoyed the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the United States of America.

Both of them have also now won four titles in the ICC tournament, the most titles as an Indian player, putting them among some of the significant names of world cricket.

Just after Ravindra Jadeja pulled the short ball into the gap to carry them over the line to earn the four-wicket victory with six balls to spare, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ran into the ground. It was a special moment for both the veterans as they congratulated each other on the 22-yard.

It wasn’t a different start for Rohit Sharma in the game as they lost their 12th consecutive toss in the ODI format. The Kiwi spin all-rounder Mitchell Santer, on winning the toss, decided to bat first on a surface that he expected to get slow under the lights in the second innings.

Rachin Ravindra looked in an aggressive version as he drilled 37 runs in 29 deliveries at a strike rate of 127.59 in the powerplay overs. The 57-run opening stand in 7.5 overs kept the Blue Brigade ahead in the contest before India’s four spinners trapped them in the web.

Kane Williamson guided the flighted delivery back to Kuldeep Yadav, whose googly was too hard to read for Ravindra. Varun Chakravarthy broke Will Young's stumps, while wicket-keeper batter Tom Latham failed to sweep the ball.

Ravindra Jadeja finished with a brilliant spell of 1/30 in his 10 overs, while Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav shared four wickets between them for 85 runs in 20 overs. Daryl Mitchell soaked the pressure for his 63 runs in 101 deliveries but couldn’t free his arms towards the end and returned to the pavilion for 63 runs in 101 balls.

It was Michael Bracewell’s unbeaten 53 runs that carried the Blackcaps over the 250-run mark. But Rohit Sharma’s use of the pacers towards the end raised a few questions as Mohammed Shami went for 74 runs in nine overs, picking up just one wicket.

Rohit Sharma powered a few big shots in the chase towards the start as he pulled Kyle Jamieson for a six over square leg. He used his feet to time the ball over the rope, as Shubman Gill also contributed with 31 runs in 50 deliveries at a strike rate of 62.

Virat Kohli’s two-ball stay for one run created pressure in the blue brigade as Shreyas Iyer dashed 48 runs in 62 balls at a strike rate of 77.42. Axar Patel, on 40 runs in 29 balls, played a wrong shot and found the fielder.

Things could have been tough in that position, but KL Rahul displayed calmness and carried them over the line with unbeaten 34 runs in 33 balls. Hardik Pandya also gave him a good hand for 18 runs at a run-a-ball.
