Veteran Indian batter Karun Nair, who was making his comeback in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Delhi Capitals, got involved in a heated fight with the premier national pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

The incident occurred during the clash between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Bumrah was not happy with the batter’s action, and the MI captain, Hardik Pandya, stepped in to calm down the situation.

The incident took place on the final over of the powerplay. After losing Jake Fraser-McGurk on the very first ball of the innings, the onus was on Abhishek Porel and Karun Nair to provide Delhi a stable start in the 206-run chase.

Nair went berserk against Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar without any fear in his eyes. He whipped Bumrah over deep backward point for a six before slicing the low full toss for another boundary two balls later. The right-handed batter lofted the Gujarat-born over the long-off region for the same shot to celebrate his half-century on the IPL comeback.

But the camera found Karun Nair apologizing the Bumrah on the last ball of the over. A collision happened on that full toss while the batter was running towards deep square leg for a run. The batter crashed into Bumrah’s back, who was standing near the non-striker’s end. Quickly realizing his mistake, the Rajasthan-born apologized to the pacer.

Bumrah lost his cool and was seen saying something to Nair furiously during the strategic time-out. Hardik stepped into the matter as Nair explained the story. The former Mumbai captain, Rohit Sharma, made a hilarious face at Nair after the incident.

Karun Nair keeps DC in the chase with a fantastic 89-run knock

It’s hard to believe that Delhi, despite making 89 runs from the number three batter, failed by 12 runs short of their 206-run chase. Karun Nair crunched the length ball from Trent Boult at cover-point for a boundary before whipping the left-arm pacer through backward point for the same result.

The veteran displayed his class when he made room and thumped the full-length delivery over wide mid-off for another boundary. When Karn Sharma, the leg spinner, came into the attack, Nair leaned across the stump and dunked the ball over deep square leg for a powerful six. Mumbai seemed to be out of plans to dismiss the former Karnataka batter.

The 33-year-old waited for the slower delivery from Mitchell Santner. He rocked back and hammered it right into the gap between the two fielders at the cow corner. But on the very next delivery, the left-arm spinner dismissed Karun Nair on 89 runs in 40 balls, shouldering on 12 boundaries and five sixes at a strike rate of 222.50.

That was the batter’s fastest IPL half-century in 22 balls, overtaking the one he smashed against the Chennai Super Kings in 25 balls during the 2018 season.

DC attempts suicide from a comfortable position

After 12 overs in the chase, Delhi made 140/3 and needed 66 runs in 48 balls. They still had in-form KL Rahul and captain Axar Patel in the side. Karun Nair, with his incredible 89-run knock, shouldered them to a powerful position.

But the Capitals attempted suicide towards the end of the overtimes. In the last three balls of the game, they had three run-outs, including the one for Ashutosh Sharma, as Delhi was bundled out for 193 runs in 19 overs. They remain in the second position with four wins and one defeat in five encounters.
