Sam Curran was embroiled in unexpected drama towards the end of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) innings in their recent IPL 2025 match against Punjab Kings (PBKS), his former franchise. The clash happened at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and saw CSK lose to PBKS by 4 wickets.
In the powerplay, the Chennai Super Kings faltered early, losing three wickets for a total of 48 runs. However, Sam Curran stepped up to the plate. The England all-rounder joined forces with Dewald Brevis (32 runs off 26 balls) to form a solid 78-run partnership that helped CSK regain the lead against PBKS.
Sam Curran made a silent but unambiguous "phone call" motion toward the CSK dugout after reaching his fifty off Azmatullah Omarzai in the fifteenth over. It seems to express his annoyance at playing just four games this season and feeling underutilized.
He's been busy at the crease today 💛

Sam Curran gestures angrily towards the Punjab Kings dugout after his dismissal
Curran batted at number three and scored an incredible 88 runs off 47 balls at 187.23, which included nine fours and four sixes. When he attempted to dodge a crisp bouncer from Marco Jansen in the 18th over, the ball kissed his bat and was comfortably caught behind the stumps by Josh Inglis, ending his blistering knock.
A nasty turn of events occurred when Sam Curran made his way back to the dugout following his outstanding knock. He exchanged hostile gestures with the PBKS camp and appeared very disturbed.
A visibly heated incident between Curran and what appeared to be some Punjab Kings management personnel and a few fans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium swiftly escalated tensions.
Curran appeared to yell something angrily during the altercation in the widely shared footage. Interestingly, he had previously played for the PBKS and even served as the team's tournament captain. "Things got a bit heated," disclosed a CSK employee who saw the drama. Evidently, there is some residual tension.

CSK knocked out of IPL 2025
The exciting knock from the English all-rounder helped CSK reach 190 in 19.2 overs. However, Punjab Kings won the match by four wickets after chasing down the score in 19.4 overs.
With just two victories and eight losses, CSK is currently at the bottom of the playoff standings and is definitely eliminated after this loss. CSK only have 4 points to their name after 10 games in IPL 2025 and have no chance of making it into the top four.
