For the Punjab Kings’ captain, Shreyas Iyer, it was a terrible evening in the second innings during the 241-run defense against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. At the halfway mark, with 241 runs on the board, they hardly thought of going through a tough time.

Shreyas Iyer first faced the heat when their premier pacer, Lockie Ferguson, left the field with a calf strain. The Mumbai-born was about to throw his cap on the field, watching their fielders drop catches while a few balls were dropping just short of them.

Generally, the rule explains that until the captains ask the umpires for a Decision Review System (DRS), the latter can’t go upstairs based only on the words of the bowler.

On the second ball of the fifth bovver, Glenn Maxwell went with a leg-side delivery. But he wasn’t happy with the umpire’s decision to give it a wide. It was a flat delivery, just sliding down the leg. The Australian all-rounder felt that Head made contact with the ball as he immediately called for a DRS check with a ‘T’ gesture towards the umpire.

Keyur Kelkar, the umpire, without consulting with Shreyas Iyer, the PBKS captain, accepted Maxwell’s decision and was about to go upstairs. That left the Punjab captain furious. In a video that went viral on social media, Iyer can be seen saying, “Phele merese pucho!! (Ask me first).”

Eventually, after discussing with Maxwell and the wicket-keeper, Prabhsimran, Iyer went for the review. The third umpire, Adrian Holdstock, canceled the wide decision as the ball brushed a bit of the thigh pad of Travis Head on its way through.

After two successive failures with the bat against the Rajasthan Royals and the Chennai Super Kings, it was important for Shreyas Iyer to turn up with a vital knock against Hyderabad. He drilled Harshal Patel over deep mid-wicket for a huge six before thumping Pat Cummins over wide long-on for the same result.

Zeeshan Ansari tossed the delivery on the off-stump as Shreyas launched it over long-off for another six to celebrate his fastest IPL fifty in just 22 balls. Wickets were falling on the other end, but that didn’t keep the Punjab captain away from nailing the boundaries.

Shreyas Iyer smacked Eshan Malinga for three successive boundaries in the 17th over to end with an 82-run knock in 36 balls, shouldering on six boundaries and as many over boundaries at a strike rate of 228. It was vital for the veteran to extend the advantage they got from the 66-run opening stand in four overs.

With the knock, Shreyas Iyer is now the fourth leading run-getter of the IPL 2025 with 250 runs in five innings at an average of 83.33 and a strike rate of 208.33, thanks to three half-centuries.

SRH registers second-highest record chase in IPL

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s openers, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, provided them the winning platform with the 171-run opening stand. The latter clubbed 141 runs in just 55 balls at a strike rate of 256.36. They chased down the mammoth score with eight wickets in hand and nine balls to spare.

Shreyas Iyer has registered his name in an unwanted record. Both the two successful chases in the history of the IPL belong to his captaincy. Punjab reached 262 at the Eden Gardens last year, while Sunrisers came in the second position.
