India enjoyed a sweet victory against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but Shreyas Iyer had a tough time on the field with an absolute fielding blunder in the last group-stage encounter.
The Indian middle-order batter didn’t enjoy a great time on the field against the Blackcaps, as Virat Kohli couldn’t stop himself from teasing the star batter.
Shreyas Iyer provides India a solid platform with the bat
India’s middle-order batter, in the clash against the Kiwis, continued his good form in the 50-over format. In the last fixture against Pakistan, the right-handed batter smashed a fine knock of 56 runs in 67 deliveries at a strike rate of over 80, shouldering on five boundaries and one six and put a 114-run knock for the third wicket with Kohli, who celebrated a fine unbeaten century.

Iyer batted cautiously initially during the New Zealand fixture in Dubai after they lost three early wickets in the first innings for just 30 runs in 6.4 overs. Shreyas Iyer put up a 98-run stand for the fourth wicket with Axar Patel and drilled 79 runs in 98 balls, thanks to four boundaries and two sixes at a strike rate of just over 80.
Axar clubbed 42 runs in 61 deliveries, shouldering on three boundaries and one six at a strike rate of just below 70, while Hardik Pandya’s late firing of 45 runs at run-a-ball with four boundaries and two sixes carried them to 249/9 in their 50 overs.

Shreyas’ shortcomings against the short ball continued in the clash against the Kiwis. He mistimed a few short deliveries before eventually getting caught in the hands of Rachin Ravindra as Will O’Rourke got the reward.
But Shreyas Iyer’s tough time in the field continued. In the second innings, on the last ball of the seventh over, the middle order batter completely lost the ball and produced a hilarious fielding moment. Will Young punched the good-length ball outside the off-stump from Axar Patel towards extra cover.
The ball rolled towards Shreyas Iyer, who misfielded it and allowed an easy single. Notably, Iyer lost the ball and spun for 360 degrees thrice cluelessly, only to realize later that it was near him. Virat Kohli saw this and continuously teased the batter for his blunder. The Delhi-born later looked to mimic Iyer in the process.

Thanks to Shreyas Iyer’s half-century, India reached a respectable total in the first innings. Hardik Pandya dismissed Rachin Ravindra early in the innings, while the spinners put a web before the Kiwi batters. Apart from Kane Williamson, no one could stand longer in the middle.

Williamson’s knock of 81 runs in 120 balls at a strike rate of seven boundaries was never going to be enough to carry them over the line. Mitchell Santer smashed 28 runs in 31 deliveries, shouldering on two over boundaries and one four at a strike rate of more than 90. Varun Chakravarthy, on just his second ODI encounter, celebrated his maiden five-wicket haul to seal the game by 44 runs.
The blue brigade will now face Australia in the first semifinal of the eight-team tournament on March 04 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. On March 5, New Zealand will face South Africa in the second semifinal at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
