MI opener Rohit Sharma was on the radar of legendary Indian opener and pundit Virender Sehwag, who never fails to combine wit with shrewd analysis in the commentary box this time.

Virender Sehwag made light of Rohit Sharma's difficulties in the powerplay during the Punjab Kings (PBKS) vs. Mumbai Indians (MI) IPL 2025 match in Jaipur.

Sehwag took advantage of the opportunity to steal the show during the May 26 IPL 2025 match, while fellow pundit Aakash Chopra noted that Rohit had faced just eight balls by the fourth over, while his opening partner Ryan Rickelton had already faced double.

Is bahane wo powerplay ke baad: Virender Sehwag’s jibe at Rohit Sharma

In typical Sehwag flair, the former aggressive Indian opener claimed that Rohit would benefit from fewer balls in the powerplay because the Mumbai Indians opener would at least not get dismissed in the first six overs. Sehwag transformed Rohit's struggle into a joke with his signature style.

“Acha hai. Is bahane wo powerplay ke baad tak tike rahenge. Warna, powerplay mein jitni jyada gendein wo khelte hai, utne jyada chances ho jaate hai unke out hone ke. (It's good. This way, he would still be at the crease after the powerplay. Otherwise, the more balls he faces in the power play, the more chances there are of him getting out,” Sehwag joked.

Rohit Sharma’s nightmare in IPL 2025

In his 13 innings thus far in the ongoing IPL 2025, Rohit Sharma has been removed nine times during the powerplay. In his 13 appearances thus far in the tournament, the seasoned opener has only scored 329 runs with a strike rate of 147.50. This season, the MI opening has only recorded three fifties.

However, after losing to Punjab Kings by seven wickets in their final season game on Monday in Jaipur, the Mumbai Indians have already qualified for the IPL 2025 playoffs and will now play either the Gujarat Titans or Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Eliminator.

Except a stellar 2024 season in which he amassed over 400 runs with a strike rate of 150.99, Rohit Sharma's IPL performance has been patchy in recent years. He has only managed seven scores of fifty or above since 2022, indicating a consistent deterioration.

Despite having a respectable strike rate in 2025, his 329 runs from 13 games haven't resulted in many game-winning situations. His lack of consistency has put further strain on teammates, particularly Suryakumar Yadav, who frequently bears the batting burden.
