The recently concluded third and final ODI between New Zealand and Pakistan saw a bizarre moment during the closing stages of the encounter. The match was played at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on April 4, 2025.

Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and chose to bowl first. But the Pakistani bowlers, barring Akif Javed, proved to be toothless. The match was shortened to 42 overs each team due to rain, and New Zealand posted 264/8. Rhys Mariu made his maiden ODI fifty, while Henry Nicholls made 37 runs.

The Kiwis drub the visitors

Daryl Mitchell made 43, but the best knock came from captain Michael Bracewell, who made 59 in 40 balls with 1 four and 6 sixes. For Pakistan, Akif Javed took 4/62, and Naseem Shah took two wickets.

In reply, the visiting batters couldn’t get going despite Babar Azam scoring a 50. Mohammad Rizwan (37), Abdullah Shafique (33), and Tayyab Tahir (33) made the majority of runs as Pakistan folded for 221 runs. With this, they lost the third ODI by 43 runs and the series 0-3.

Floodlights shut down in Pakistan innings; Tayyab Tahir almost gets hit by Jacob Duffy's delivery

The floodlights at Bay Oval went out on Saturday, leaving the players from Pakistan and New Zealand stuck in the dark.

The event took place during Pakistan's 39th over of the chase. Against Tayyab Tahir, Jacob Duffy was charging in to bowl the fourth delivery of the game. Just as Duffy was about to release his delivery, the ground turned completely dark. Tahir was terrified during the event and moved away from the wickets to protect himself.

If Duffy's pitch had struck the batter—or any fielder, for that matter—it could have been disastrous. Whether or not Duffy bowled his delivery is not obvious from the images.

Here is the video:

The match was briefly interrupted by the event. All dreams of Pakistan's pursuit were dashed in the last over when Tahir, batting at 33 off 30 balls, lost his pace and ended up slicing the very next ball straight into the hands of deep point.

Imam-ul-Haq, a batter, was taken off the field on a medical cart earlier in the game when the ball struck his face. Usman Khan, who entered the game as a concussion substitution, eventually took Imam's place after the latter was forced to quit due to injury.

Pakistan's miserable trip to New Zealand came to an end as they lost the third ODI and went home without winning either the T20I or the ODI series.
