Yograj Singh, the former Indian pacer, has dropped a massive and shocking statement on Abhishek Sharma’s selection before the Indian Premier League (IPL) during his childhood days. He reckoned that the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) and their coaches provided them with the wrong information on the batter.

Yograj spoke about how in the past, there were many players of the country who didn’t get the right guidance and couldn’t move forward in their careers.

“They addressed Abhishek Sharma as a bowler”- Yograj Singh blames PCA

Yograj Singh, father of former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, recalled the story from six to seven years ago when the PCA members and the coaches provided his son with the wrong information on Abhishek Sharma before his selection.

“When they asked for Abhishek Sharma’s list from the PCA (Punjab Cricket Association) and the coaches, do you have any idea of what they said? Sir, this is a bowler, and he only bowls!! Yuvi asked them to bring out his performance, and then he found out that Abhishek had 24 centuries.” The former pacer said in a recent interview.

He remarked that Abhishek had already notched up 24 centuries in his name by that time, and Yuvi sent him his performance as they decided to build the youngster’s career.

So, he asked them the reason for giving the wrong information. This lad has scored nearly 24 centuries, even though that’s the story from six to seven years ago. Then Yuvi sent me the performance and asked him something to do.” Yograj Singh elaborated.

The veteran took a dig at a few of the former selectors and the board members from the past, who have wasted some great players’ careers due to jealousy.

“I told him that we should build this player rather than destroy him out of jealousy. But then what happened? When the diamond comes into the hands of another diamond, it becomes Kohinoor!! But if the same diamond had gone into the hands of a cobbler, then he would have demolished it. There are so many players in the country who have gone through the same issue over the years.” He concluded.

Abhishek Sharma’s performance in the IPL and for India

Abhishek Sharma debuted in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Delhi Capitals in 2018 when he smashed 63 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 190.90. He went through a few struggling years for the Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2019 to 2021.

But the southpaw’s first breakthrough season came in 2022, when he clubbed 426 runs in 14 innings at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate of 133.13, shouldering two half-centuries at the best score of 75 runs. In the following season, he made 226 runs in 11 innings at 143.94.

But the most successful year for Abhishek Sharma was the previous edition, where his contribution of 484 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 204.21 with three fifties helped them get into the final of the competition.

This season, the 24-year-old has gone a bit hot and cold, with 232 runs in seven innings at an average of 33.14 and a strike rate of 188.61, including the record century of 141 against the Punjab Kings.

Sunrisers Hyderabad aims to turn the tables

Sunrisers Hyderabad made a superb start in the IPL 2025 with a home victory against the Rajasthan Royals. But since then, they faced just one win in the next six encounters, including four successive defeats.

From the ninth position in the points table at a net run rate of -1.217, SRH needs some inspirational performances to turn the tables and aim for the playoff spot.
