With England selecting Jos Buttler for the upcoming three-match ODI series starting on May 29 against the West Indies, the timing of the series could create dilemmas between the franchise and country.
Following last week’s suspension of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, due to the tension at the border between India and Pakistan, the tournament has been pushed back to June 03 from its original date of May 25.
Gujarat Titans to miss Jos Buttler for IPL 2025 playoffs
Jos Buttler, who flew back home during the one-week break of the tournament, is expected to rejoin the Gujarat Titans on May 14 before starting practice at the Narendra Modi Stadium. They will restart the remainder of the tournament on May 18 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium against the Delhi Capitals.
Buttler, batting at number three for the franchise, has played a huge role in the success in the tournament. The right-handed batter has contributed immensely along with the two openers, captain Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, for the side.

Jos Buttler is, meanwhile, currently the fifth leading run-getter of the Gujarat side with 500 runs in just 11 innings at an average of 71.42 and a strike rate of 163.93, scoring on five half-centuries at the best score of unbeaten 97 runs against the Capitals.
In Jos Buttler’s absence, there will be a huge hole in the batting order of the 2022 champions, who will hope to find a great replacement in case the former England captain flies back home for national commitments.
3 Players Who Can Replace Jos Buttler In Gujarat Titans For IPL 2025
1. Jonny Bairstow (England)
England’s wicket-keeper batter, Jonny Bairstow, is currently playing in the County Championship after being unsold in the last mega auction of the tournament. Bairstow could be a great replacement for Jos Buttler for the Gujarat Titans.
The Yorkshire batter, on the flip side, is aggressive and can add value at number three with the runs, besides keeping wickets. In 2024, he smashed 298 runs in 11 innings at an average of just under 30 and a strike rate of 152.82, shouldering one century at the best score of unbeaten 108 runs.
Overall, he has notched up 1589 runs in 50 innings at an IPL average of 34.54, thanks to nine fifties and two centuries.
2. Evin Lewis (West Indies)
Evin Lewis could be another decent replacement for the Gujarat Titans in the playoffs of the IPL 2025. The southpaw is known for his aggressive batting performance in the top order and could make a difference for the Shubman Gill-led side.

Meanwhile, Lewis didn’t enjoy a successful career in the event with just 654 runs in 26 innings at an average of 27.25 and a strike rate of 137.10, thanks to four half-centuries at the best score of 65. Lewis has a decent record against the spinners, and that will be valuable for the franchise as the tired pitches will tend to get slow towards the end of the season.
3. Jason Roy (England)
Jason Roy is another aggressive England opening batter who has notched up runs around the park for the national side and various franchises. His form has dipped a little in the last few years, and he is still good enough to contribute to any side.
On the other hand, in his previous season of the IPL in 2023, playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders, Roy smashed 285 runs in eight innings at an average of 35.62 and a strike rate of 151.59, thanks to two fifties at the best score of 61 runs.
