The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has punished the Gujarat Titans’ (GT) captain, Shubman Gill, for maintaining a slow over-rate during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash against the Delhi Capitals at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
It’s the franchise’s first over-rate offense of the edition. They grabbed a vital victory against the table toppers by seven wickets with four balls to spare in a 204-run chase to hold the number one position in the points table.
Shubman Gill fined INR 12 lakh for slow over-rate offense
The governing council of the league has fined INR 12 lakh on Shubman Gill. They imposed the penalty under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s code of Conduct, which deals with the minimum over-rate offenses. He joins the list of a few captains who have already faced similar fines this season.

Delhi Axar Patel, Mumbai Indians’ Hardik Pandya, Rajasthan Royals’ Riyan Parag and Sanju Samson, and Lucknow Super Giants’ Rishabh Pant- all of them have been fined for the slow over-rate offenses in the 2025 season of the event. Shubman Gill is the new inclusion.
On a hot afternoon, it was tough for the bowlers to change over from one end to another. The veteran Indian pacer Ishant Sharma looked fried in the heat as he bowled well for his three overs, picking up 1/19 at an economy rate of just 6.33.
Even Mohammad Siraj was struggling with some cramps and had no energy by the time he was bowling the last over of his spell towards the twilight period. Jos Buttler, keeping for 20 overs under the sun and then batting from the second to the final over of the innings, also experienced the same issue.
Gujarat Titans restricted Delhi to 203/8
Winning the toss, Shubman Gill decided to bowl first on a surface that he anticipated to get better under the floodlights in the second innings. They didn’t enjoy a great start in the powerplay, with the visiting side putting 73/2 in the first six overs.
Karun Nair creamed his way to 31 runs in 18 balls at a strike rate of 172.22, thanks to two boundaries and as many over boundaries. On the other hand, KL Rahul also displayed aggression from the very first ball of his innings, but his 28-run knock also couldn’t be carried away for a long time.
That was the issue for the 2020 runners-up. In the entire batting department, five batters crossed the 25-run mark but failed to celebrate a half-century, which meant they were going with new batters in different phases of the game.
The surface got a bit trickier towards the end of the innings, and Shubman Gill used his bowlers smartly.
Jos Buttler carried GT to a seven-wicket victory
Shubman Gill, who has notched up 215 runs in seven innings at an average of 35.83 and a strike rate of 149.30, thanks to two fifties at the best score of unbeaten 61 runs, couldn’t add much value to the scorecard against Delhi. He was short of his crease in a miscommunication with his opening partner.

Meanwhile. Jos Buttler, thanks to his 97-run unbeaten knock in 54 balls at a strike rate of around 180, shouldered the Shubman Gill-led side over the winning line by seven wickets. Rahul Tewatia clubbed a six and a four in the first two balls of Mitchell Starc’s last over to complete the chase.
Gujarat is now at the top of the table with five wins in seven encounters at a net run rate of +0.984.
