The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to resume after the suspension for a week due to the tense border situation between the two neighboring countries, India and Pakistan.

BCCI stopped the event immediately after the clash between the Delhi Capitals (DC) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS) was called off midway at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala due to security concerns.

Overseas players are not expected to return for IPL 2025

A few reports from the board have informally stated that all the franchises could start calling back their overseas players for the resumption of the IPL 2025 by May 13. However, some developments suggest that the overseas players might not come back to India for the last few games due to personal reasons and international commitments.

Revsportz has reported that a foreign player of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has already declared that he would not return to India for the restart of the season. Josh Hazlewood, the premier pacer of the side, will also miss the league due to the shoulder injury, and some franchises will also face the same issue.

However, even after the overseas players potentially not returning to India, the BCCI is unlikely to take action against them. A force majeure, which is a contractual clause for individuals fulfilling their contracts in case of an extraordinary event, is beyond their control, and that’s the reason they are not returning to India for the IPL 2025.

Franchises to suffer in overseas players’ absence

RCB will be without Hazlewood due to injury. However, they will not have the services of Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell, the two England players, who will start preparation for the home series against the West Indies and South Africa.

For the Gujarat Titans, it will be a huge blow. They won’t have Jos Buttler, the England batter, at number three for the last few games of the IPL 2025, along with Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee, who will fly to Lord’s for the WTC 2023-25 final against Australia.

Mumbai Indians won’t have Will Jacks while Corbin Bosch will be in the plans for the Protea side in the red-ball squad. There is no news on where the Kiwi players, Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner, would be returning for the remainder of the IPL.

Punjab Kings will hope to get back their overseas players. Meanwhile, a few reports claimed that their players had stayed back in India after their head coach, Ricky Ponting, requested them. It will be a huge bonus for the franchise, which can start its training in a few days.

Mitchell Starc has already landed in Australia and is unlikely to return to India for the rest of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Travis Head and Pat Cummins can also stay back at home. However, it won’t be an issue for the franchise, as the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have already been knocked out of the IPL 2025.

IPL 2025 is likely to restart on May 16 or 17

After the ceasefire between the two countries, the IPL 2025 is expected to restart on May 16 or 17 if things go to plan. The management has also selected four venues in Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad for all the games.

They have also planned to shift the final to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, due to the inclement weather at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on May 30.
