KL Rahul, the new recruit in the Delhi Capitals’ franchise has reportedly angered the DC management after he refused the captaincy offer ahead of the IPL 2025 season.
The team has named all-rounder Axar Patel as captain for the forthcoming season after he was acquired for ₹16.50 crore prior to the major auction.
Delhi Capitals got hold of Rahul in Mega Auction
Before the 2025 Indian Premier League, the Capitals let go of their former captain, Rishabh Pant.
The franchise had to make a difficult decision in selecting a new captain because the competition was scheduled to start on March 22.
Among the leading candidates were KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis, and DC named Axar as their new captain.
KL Rahul's Captaincy Experience in IPL
In the 2025 mega auction, KL Rahul was purchased by the Delhi Capitals for ₹14 crore. In 132 IPL games, the 32-year-old has amassed 4,683 runs at an average of 45.46, with four hundreds and 37 fifties.
In 2020 and 2021, Rahul was the captain of the Punjab Kings (PBKS). The right-handed hitter then led the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to the playoffs in his debut season as captain from 2022 to 2024. Despite finishing ninth in 2024, LSG qualified for the playoffs in their second season.
Rahul is tied for the eighth most victories in IPL history with 31 victories and 31 defeats in 64 games as captain. Additionally, he has captained the Indian national team in a variety of settings.
KL Rahul rejecting DC captaincy has angered franchise management
Rahul turned down the Delhi Capitals' invitation to lead the team in the 2025 Indian Premier League, according to an IANS report.
Rahul has decided to concentrate just on his batting and wicketkeeping after a contentious time as captain of the Lucknow Super Giants, which included a public spat with owner Sanjiv Goenka.
The franchise owners approached the 32-year-old, but instead of assuming the leadership position, he chose to play a part.

The Capitals will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Monday, March 24 at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
