The former Chennai Super Kings captain, MS Dhoni, has recorded a new achievement in the Indian Premier League as a wicket-keeper during their recent fixture against the Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh.
Dhoni became the first wicket-keeper batter to collect 150 catches in the IPL. He achieved the record after dismissing Nehal Wadhera during the evening game on Tuesday evening.
MS Dhoni becomes the first wicket-keeper to take 150 IPL catches
The 2025 season of the league has displayed some fabulous stumping and catching from MS Dhoni. It started on the very first game against the Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Noor Ahmed bowled a perfect delivery that nearly kissed Suryakumar Yadav's bat. The Mumbai captain didn’t pick up the delivery and was not in control of playing the shot. Once his backfoot got up the crease, it took MS Dhoni less than a second to break the stumps and send back Sky.
During the clash against Punjab, Ravichandran Ashwin bowled a length delivery as Nehal looked to sweep it over the fence for a six.
But the bounce of the ball hit it on the leading edge of the blade as it flew in the air. Dhoni, with a calm head, grabbed the catch to script the IPL record.
His quick work behind the stumps during the tight moments has been the key to success for CSK. MS also has 45 stumps to his name.
MS Dhoni in the question of showing intent with the bat
Chennai hasn’t done anything significant in this year’s IPL. But the biggest question during their chase has been on MS Dhoni.
The fans and pundits want the veteran to come a bit higher in the batting order, besides showing intent from the very first ball. However, the head coach, Stephen Fleming, reckoned that the wicket-keeper’s knee issue wouldn’t allow him to carry for a long period in the game.
The question was raised when the Ranchi-born arrived at the crease at number nine, even after Ravichandran Ashwin, during their 192-run chase against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at home. He nailed 30 runs in 16 balls as they fell short of the score by 50 runs.
Even though MS Dhoni got a promotion to number seven for the chase against the Delhi Capitals, his poor knock of 30 runs in 26 balls kept the Super Kings away from winning the chase of 184 runs against the Delhi Capitals at the home venue.
However, he performed decently against the Punjab Kings in Chandigarh with a knock of 27 runs in 12 balls, shouldering on one boundary and three sixes at a strike rate of 225.
Chennai lost their fourth successive game. Dhoni could have come a bit higher at four because they don’t have much firepower in the batting line-up of struggling Ravindra Jadeja and Vijay Shankar on the side.
CSK struggles at number nine in IPL 2025
Chennai started their campaign with a victory at home against the Mumbai Indians. It wasn’t still a comprehensive win on the last over despite being ahead in the fixture for the lion’s share.

Since then, nothing has gone their way. Their bowling has worked in patches, but the batting department is under serious pressure. Against Punjab, they celebrated their very first opening stand of 50 runs and now can only hope to extend the good work into their next clash.
They will face the Kolkata Knight Riders next on April 11 at their home venue. It’s a do-or-die situation for both the struggling franchises.
