The former Indian off-spin all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin reckoned that the Chennai Super Kings’ performance has received so much criticism in IPL 2025, as he trolls the fans, in comparison with the fans of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

The five-time champions are sitting at the penultimate position of the points table with just one win in five encounters, including four successive defeats.

The veteran states that he was never bothered by the trolls and often speaks with an attacking mindset. Ashwin expressed the fans of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as the real ones in a recent discussion of the side’s performance in the league.

“I strongly believe real fans would not let their players down in any situation”- Ravichandran Ashwin

The former spinner recalls that during a past discussion with the current head coach of the RCB side, Dinesh Karthik, the latter highlighted that Bengaluru’s fans won’t let any players down in tough situations.

“Last year, Dinesh Karthik said to me, 'RCB fans won't let down any of their players,' and I agree that fandom is about criticisms and keeping it real. I strongly believe real fans would not let their players down in any situation, that's real fandom.” Ashwin expressed in a recent interaction.

The off-spinner has faced intense scrutiny on his performance early in the campaign. Having retired from international cricket last year, he joined the CSK side for INR 9.75 crore, marking a return to the franchise after more than a decade.

“But, you can be constructive with your criticism and trolling. At the same time, some fans don't let their players down. I believe they are real fans.” The Tamil Nadu player addressed.

But he is yet to stand on his expectations, having taken only five wickets in as many games at an economy rate of just below 10. Against Punjab Kings, he bowled well in one over, picking up the wickets of both Glenn Maxwell and Nehal Wadhera. But he conceded 21 runs to end the spell.

CSK stays in the ninth position

Chennai started their campaign with a victory against the Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. They were ahead in the contest for a long time. But a lot of wickets in the middle overs made it tough for the side. Later, it was Rachin Ravindra’s six who carried them over the winning margin.

The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side hasn’t won anything since then. They lost four successful games against RCB, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, and the Delhi Capitals.

Their highest run-scorer of the event (Rachin with 145 runs) is at the 16th position among all the players in the IPL 2025. Apart from the batting, Chennai has struggled in the spin department. Both the veteran spinners, Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, have not contributed the liking as Noor Ahmed.

RCB enjoys a top-tier ranking in IPL 2025

The RCB side started the IPL 2025, under new leader Rajat Patidar, with a superb victory against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens. Phil Salt and Virat Kohli celebrated a fine 90-run opening stand to lay down the winning platform.

In the second game against Chennai, it was Tim David who smashed Sam Curran around the park to get the win under the belt. After a defeat against the Gujarat Titans at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, they have three wins in four fixtures.

Currently, RCB is in the third position with a positive net run rate.
