Shreyas Iyer might be a surprise name as the BCCI is set to unveil the list of Indian players for the BCCI central contracts. Some players, including Iyer, might see fortune rain on them, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli might see a demotion in their grades.
During India's triumphant Champions Trophy campaign, Shreyas Iyer played a crucial role in the team's victory. He will, therefore, most likely receive a spot back on the list as a reward for his performance.
After retiring from the T20I format last year, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are not all-format players. They may therefore be subject to a probable downgrading within their category.
Shreyas Iyer redeems himself to get back his BCCI contract
The most recent list of national central contracts for BCCI is probably going to change a little. After being taken off the list in 2024, Shreyas Iyer is prepared to return.
The board removed Shreyas Iyer from this list because they believed he was giving the IPL more importance than domestic cricket. Nevertheless, he continued to play domestic cricket after being removed from the list, and he most recently had a fantastic Champions Trophy performance.
To be eligible for the next season, a player must participate in three Test matches, eight ODIs, or ten T20Is in a given calendar year. Shreyas Iyer fared admirably in his 11 ODI appearances this season, including five at the Champions Trophy.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, the opener, may also be promoted from Grade B to Grade A alongside Shreyas Iyer. Jaiswal has established himself as a staple in the Test format and has shown promise in all of the formats he has played so far.
However, Ishan Kishan might not be so lucky as he will not be considered for the BCCI central contract as he didn’t play any international matches for India in 2024.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to be demoted from A+ grade
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are presently kept in the Grade A+ category, have also received some updates. Last year, Rohit, Kohli, Bumrah, and Jadeja were all first-choice players across all forms, earning them a spot in the A+ group.
Since Rohit and Kohli are not all-format players, it is thought that none of the stakeholders support their continued inclusion in the top division. Ravindra Jadeja's ranking in the A+ group is also being scrutinized alongside them.
Following last year's T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement from the T20I format. Since all three of them only play in Test matches and One-Day Internationals, their place in the top BCCI division is under scrutiny.
Since he is still an all-format player, only Jasprit Bumrah is guaranteed to be in the top grade. In addition to being one of the top players in all formats in recent years, Bumrah is expected to succeed Rohit Sharma as India's next Test captain.
Axar Patel to be promoted; Nitish Kumar Reddy to get rewards
Additionally, Axar Patel is probably going to be promoted from Group B to Group A. The spin-bowling all-rounder has become more well-known in recent years and has been instrumental in India's two ICC championship victories.
In the absence of Shubman Gill, Axar was also selected as India's vice-captain for the recent Twenty20 International series against England. Former off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who declared his international retirement during the Australia tour last year, will be taken off the list.
This list is probably going to include young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy as well, who has so far shown promise in the international arena. Reddy participated in all five Test matches in the series and had a strong showing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
