According to Dainik Jagran, Shubman Gill, India's new Test captain, is expected to assume the ODI captaincy as well. In addition to considering Gill for the ODI captaincy position, the selectors view him as the future captain in all forms.

The Indian ODI team is now captained by Rohit Sharma, who also took home the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the final ICC trophy in the ODI format.

Selectors eyeing a fresh team

However, building the team for the upcoming ten years is the goal of the Indian selectors.

Gill is the most likely candidate to assume the captaincy in all game forms. The new Indian red-ball captain, Gill, was revealed.

Shubman Gill to replace Rohit Sharma as ODI captain?

Dainik Jagran claims that Gill may soon assume the job of ODI captain as well. In ODI cricket, the right-hander is Rohit's deputy. If the management wants to develop Gill before the 2027 ODI World Cup, now would be an ideal moment to give him the ODI captaincy.

As a senior team captain, Shubman Gill has little experience. He led India to a 4-1 victory over Zimbabwe in the 2024 T20I series; however, that was his only time as captain.

He was never given the chance to captain the Indian team in white-ball cricket after that. However, Shubman Gill will now be captaining the Indian Test team for a five-match series in England. The England tour will be the biggest challenge for Gill to showcase his leadership skills.

Gautam Gambhir is not in favor of split captaincy

Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir opposes divided captaincy, arguing that working with a single player will be simpler than working with two or more. However, he added that it would be difficult for anyone to lead the team continuously for ten months.

After Shubman Gill was named the new Test captain, India now has three different captains for three distinct formats. Previously, Rohit Sharma was the captain of the Indian squad in all formats.

Rohit Sharma is captaining the ODI team, while Suryakumar Yadav is guiding the T20I squad. Gill may perhaps become the captain of all formats if the rumours that he would be taking up the ODI captaincy role prove to be accurate.
