Tamim Iqbal, former Bangladesh captain, has been rushed to hospital after he suffered 2 heart attacks while playing a match in the ongoing Dhaka Premier League 2025 tournament. The incident happened during the match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club in Sarwar, just outside Dhaka.

Without a doubt, Tamim is among the best cricket players to come out of Bangladesh. The 36-year-old represented his nation in 70 Test matches, 243 ODIs, and 78 T20Is. He is Bangladesh's second-highest run scorer in all formats.

With 8357 runs at an average of 36.65 and a strike rate of 78.52, including 14 hundreds and 56 fifties, he is Bangladesh's top run scorer in One-Day Internationals. He has amassed 10 hundreds and 5134 runs at an average of 38.89 in Test cricket.

He is the only Bangladesh cricketer to score a hundred in all three formats of the game.

Tamim Iqbal is on life support in hospital

It is thought that halfway through the game, Tamim Iqbal experienced some chest pain, and it was decided to send him to the hospital right away. To save time, a helicopter was also scheduled, but it was unable to transport him from the Savar location.

ESPNCricinfo reports that match referee Debabrata Paul later took him to Fazilatunnesa Hospital, which is close to the field.

"Nafees Iqbal and his mother are here now. The doctors did an angiogram. Out of his two arteries, one is 100 percent blocked another is partially blocked," match referee Debabrata Paul told the Bangladesh Daily.

Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan No 3 Ground in Savar is the venue for the game. The tournament, which is also Bangladesh's top 50-over domestic competition, is in its 44th match.

“He underwent initial checks at a local hospital, where mild heart issues were suspected. Efforts were made to transport him to Dhaka, but on the way to the helipad, he experienced severe chest pain and had to be rushed back. Medical reports later confirmed it was a massive heart attack,” said Dr Debashish Chowdhury, chief physician of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as quoted by Sportstar.

“It is a difficult time for all of us. He is currently under observation, and the medical team is doing everything possible for his recovery. He is currently under observation. This is all the information available at the moment. We are heading to the hospital, and further updates will be provided later,'' he added.

Tamim Iqbal is the fourth-leading run-scorer in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 2024-25. The southpaw has scored 368 runs in seven innings at an average of 73.60, including two centuries. His 102.50 strike rate is comparable to modern One-Day cricket.
