Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has been disqualified from IPL 2025, which is a devastating blow to the team. Notably, Gaikwad scored 122 runs at a strike rate of 150.61 in the ongoing season of IPL in five games.
Before Friday, April 11's game against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming acknowledged this news. Gaikwad's elbow injury has forced him out of the IPL 2025. He suffered the injury on March 30 while playing for CSK against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati.
Interestingly, he was struck in the elbow by RR pacer Tushar Deshpande, but he kept batting. He played two more games against the Delhi Capitals on April 5 and the Punjab Kings on April 8 despite concerns about his fitness following the event.
MS Dhoni to captain CSK after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury
He has been ruled out of the entire competition, though, suggesting that his injury is more serious than first thought. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming disclosed during the pre-game news conference that they had an X-ray of Gaikwad's elbow that came back inconclusive and an MRI that showed a fracture in the radial neck.
He also disclosed that Ruturaj Gaikwad would relinquish his captaincy for the rest of the season to uncapped batsman MS Dhoni.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was seen playing foot-volley with a heavily bandaged elbow
In the meantime, images from Chennai were displayed during a JioHotstar discussion before the RCB vs. DC match, and Gaikwad was seen using the same wounded hand, which was also strapped, to play with the ball.
Cricket player-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra was not pleased by this; he was completely taken aback and thought Gaikwad's injury was strange. It's not ideal to play with the ball while hurt, he remarked.

A Young Wicketkeeper Leading the Team, Hopefully Things Will Change - Ruturaj Gaikwad
Due to an elbow injury, Ruturaj Gaikwad will miss the rest of the 2025 Indian Premier League. The Chennai Super Kings' skipper, MS Dhoni, has returned. Gaikwad, who succeeded Dhoni as captain before the 2024 season, was compelled to return the responsibility to Dhoni.
Gaikwad thanked supporters for their support while expressing disappointment at the injury in a video posted by CSK on X (previously known as Twitter). He called Dhoni a "young wicketkeeper" and expressed his optimism that the squad would get better under his direction.
"Really gutted to be missing the future part of the IPL due to an unfortunate elbow injury but thank you for your support until now. Yes, we have been struggling for a while, but now that a young wicketkeeper leading the team, hopefully things will change," Ruturaj said.
