The Delhi Capitals’ wicket-keeper batter, KL Rahul, has continued an impressive run in the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was back at the Ekhana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, where he led the Super Giants before the old owner, Sanjiv Goenka.

Delhi scripted an eight-wicket victory over the franchise as the Indian middle-order batter remained unbeaten on 57 runs in 42 balls at a strike rate of 135.71, shouldering on three boundaries and three sixes. The captain, Axar Patel, clubbed an unbeaten 34 runs in 20 balls at a strike rate of 170.

Goenka was present during the clash. It was one of the three sixes of the wicket-keeper, where the batter used his feet to nail the off-spinner, Aiden Markram, over the bowler’s end of an over-boundary. He muscled it over the bowler’s head, and the reaction of Goenka was notable.

It was a wry smile, perhaps in admiration of the batter, whom he accused of a low strike rate for his knocks in the previous season. In the three seasons he led the side, they reached the playoffs twice.

But in the last season of the tournament, they ended up in the seventh position for the very first time since 2022. It was the game between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Lucknow Super Giants at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.

KL Rahul played a very slow knock in the first innings as the Sunrisers chased down the score with 10 wickets in hand and more than 10 overs to spare. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma clubbed a few aggressive knocks to chase down the target.

KL Rahul’s unbeaten match-winning knock

Delhi made a fantastic start to the 160-run chase as Karun Nair and Abhishek Porel made a fine opening stand between them. KL Rahul, coming at number three, made a fine start in the innings as he worked the leg-side delivery through the backward square leg region.

The Karnataka batter smacked the length delivery towards the hips into the fine leg region. In the middle overs, he was taking a lot of deliveries before the captain, Axar Patel, used aggression to carry them over the line.

KL Rahul celebrated his half-century in just 40 deliveries before sending the ball over the boundary rope to celebrate their victory. At the end of the game, while the players were shaking hands with everyone, the veteran seemed to ignore a potential interaction with Goenka, who tried his best to start the conversation.

The Bengaluru-born is currently the seventh leading run-getter of the tournament with 323 runs in seven innings at an average of 64.60 and a strike rate of 153.80, having on three half-centuries. He has nailed 25 boundaries and 16 over boundaries so far in the tournament.

Delhi Capitals are near the playoff qualification

Delhi Capitals made a fantastic start in the IPL 2025 with four successive victories to start the season. But they slipped in the middle phase of the event.

Axar’s army faced their first defeat of the season against the Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium before claiming a close victory against Rajasthan in the super-over. After another defeat against Gujarat, they returned with a vital win against Lucknow.

Currently, they are in the second position in the points table with six wins in eight games at a net run rate (NRR) of +0.657. Their next clash will be against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at home.
