The former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain, Virat Kohli, made a wild celebration to show their seven-wicket victory over the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh.

He mocked the opponent leader and India’s middle-order batter, Shreyas Iyer, before getting engaged in a heated chat at the end of the contest.

With just eight runs required in the last two overs and RCB losing just three wickets in the chase, Iyer decided to use Nehal Wadhera, the part-time spinner, in the penultimate over. After three singles on the first four deliveries, Jitesh Sharma sensed the victory.

The wicket-keeper batter pulled the short delivery into the stands for a six to claim the much-needed win for the side. Virat Kohli, standing at the non-strikers’ end, looked pumped up with a wild celebration at Iyer before sharing laughs and good vibes at the end.

Both veteran players were engaged in a heated chat. It was the second round between the two sides of the edition after Punjab, one evening ago, blew away Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in a rain-hit encounter.

Virat Kohli creates new IPL record

In the 158-run chase, RCB lost Phil Salt early at the end of the opening over. Virat Kohli, however, was in a different mood as he got forward and creamed the overpitched delivery straight back past the bowler for a boundary. Devdutt Padikkal started his aggressive batting from the other end, which helped the former captain to take the backseat.

The Delhi-born was mostly looking to get the singles and doubles off the pacers and the spinners equally to keep the scorecard moving from both ends. None of the Punjab bowlers were able to keep the pressure on the batters or pick up wickets.

With a single towards the long-off region against Marco Jansen, Virat Kohli celebrated his 59th half-century in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He surpassed David Warner in the list to claim the top spot, besides enjoying eight centuries to his name.

As Bengaluru went near the chase, the veteran decided to shift gears, He lofted the tossed-up delivery from Yuzvendra Chahal over the bowler’s head for a six before whipping the very next ball towards the deep mid-wicket region for a beautiful boundary.

Virat Kohli stayed unbeaten on 73 runs in 54 balls, thanks to seven boundaries and one six, at a strike rate of 135.19, and earned his 20th Player of the Match award in the league’s history.

“These two points can make a massive difference in terms of qualification. We have played some amazing cricket away from home. When you go from eight to ten, it makes a huge difference. I wanted to accelerate more but felt Devdutt Padikkal made a difference today, and this award should go to him.” Virat Kohli expressed this in the post-match presentation ceremony.

RCB executes top-class death bowling vs PBKS

Bengaluru, opting to bowl first, kept picking wickets at regular intervals for the entire innings. Most of the Punjab batters got the start but couldn’t convert it into a big score.

But both Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood executed the yorkers brilliantly in the last five overs of the innings to restrict the Kings to 157/6 in their 20 overs. Even an aggressive batter like Shashank Singh got only 31 runs in 33 balls with one boundary on his name.
