Will Pucovski, a 27-year-old Australian opener who has only played one Test for his country, has officially resigned from cricket. The young cricketer stated that he is still dealing with concussion symptoms from a year ago, describing the trying period as a "difficult year."

Pucovski's bright career was hindered by a series of concussions. He last appeared in a Sheffield Shield match in March 2024, when he was forced to retire injured after being hit in the helmet by a bouncer from Riley Meredith. The batter has had "scary" concussion symptoms since the incident.

Will Pucovski made his Test debut for Australia against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 2021. The batter scored 62 runs as an opener in the contest. However, he sustained a shoulder dislocation while fielding in the same game, necessitating surgery and a protracted recuperation.

Pucovski was on Victoria's men's contract list for the 2023-24 season, but he didn't practice or play with the squad. After his last concussion, an independent medical panel advised him to stop playing cricket.

I'm Not Going to Be Playing Cricket Again - Will Pucovski

Will Pucovski spoke up about the seriousness of his condition after his most recent concussion. The 27-year-old declared that he would not be returning to the game at any level. He stated that stepping away from cricket was the correct decision.

"I'm not going to be playing cricket again. It's been a really difficult year, to put it as simply as possible. The simple message is that I won't be playing at any level again.

In the couple of months post that (last concussion), I struggled to get anything done; walking around the house was a struggle. My fiancé was annoyed because I didn't contribute to the chores. I was sleeping a lot. From there, it's been a tough year; a lot of the symptoms didn't go away, which has led me to this decision. The first few months were horrendous, but things didn't leave me,” Pucovski told SEN Radio on Tuesday (April 8).

However, Pucovski postponed making an official decision. The cricketer stated that he would wait till he was rid of symptoms before declaring his retirement. He claimed that the panel could not force him to retire, but the final choice rested with him.

"In my head, I didn't want to make an official call until I was symptom-free. When you're struggling, it's hard to make a huge decision. The medical panel recommended that I retire, and that was difficult to come to terms with. I felt like I was coming over the hill with a few things. Technically, you can't make anyone retire from anything...it got made clear to me it was a strong recommendation, but the final decision ultimately was up to me,” he stated.

Will Pucovski Named Melbourne Head Coach

Pucovski stated that he would continue participating in the game. He has already committed to being the head coach of his Victoria Premier club, Melbourne, for the 2025-26 season. He has already provided television commentary and may return to it at some point.

Pucovski scored 2350 runs at 45.19 in first-class cricket, including seven hundreds (three doubles).
