The Punjab Kings (PBKS) have started the IPL 2025 campaign with a victory against the Gujarat Titans. Despite losing regular wickets in the game, they kept on going with the same aggressive intent and nailed the big shots to reach over the 240-run mark in the first innings.

There was also a point when PBKS leaked so many runs in the middle overs, and it was required to give nothing for two overs. Vijaykumar Vyshak, coming out of the cold as an impact player, didn’t give away a single boundary in two overs besides getting help from Marco Jansen to earn an 11-run victory.

Openers- Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh (wk)

Priyansh Arya grabbed the spotlight when he smacked six sixes in an over during the Delhi Premier League 2024 season. Many expected the PBKS management to go with Josh Inglis, but they went with young Arya as the opening batter.

The left-handed batter drilled 47 runs in 23 balls, shouldering on seven boundaries and two sixes at a strike rate of 204.35. Prabhsimran Singh couldn’t contribute much with the blade, with just five runs on the board in eight balls.

Both of them will hope to go with all guns blazing against the Lucknow Super Giants’ bowling line-up, which can get exposed against the powerful top-order sides.

Middle order- Shreyas Iyer (c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Shashank Singh

Shreyas Iyer, the new captain of the PBKS, started his IPL journey for Punjab with a straight boundary against Kagiso Rabada on the very first ball. From that point, he didn’t look back and enjoyed a great time in the middle. Azmatullah Omarzai, surprisingly, came at number four and killed the momentum with 16 runs in 15 balls.

Glenn Maxwell, on the very first ball, looked to play the reverse sweep and got undone for a golden duck. Iyer, despite all of these falls of wickets, didn’t slow down in the innings. Marcus Stoinis returned to the pavilion for 20 runs in 15 balls.

The game-changing partnership came between Shashank Singh and Iyer as they nailed 81 runs for the sixth wicket in just 28 balls. Iyer, the PBKS captain, remained unbeaten on 97 runs in 42 balls, while Shashank Singh, getting the free license, nailed 44 runs in 16 balls.

The 2014 runners-up finished with 243 runs on the board in their allotted 20 overs for the loss of five wickets. From 105/4 in the 16th over, it was an incredible performance as they hope to repeat the same in the second encounter at the Ekana Stadium.

Bowlers: Marco Jansen, Suryansh Shedge/Nehal Wadhera, Arshdeep Singh, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Yuzvendra Chahal

Suryansh Shedge didn’t get the chance to bat or bowl in the first game for PBKS, and that could lead the side to think of adding Nehal Wadhera to the playing eleven. Marco Jansen did well in patches, but his overall figures of 1/44 in four overs were not inspiring.

Yuzvendra Chahal went for 34 runs without any success in three overs, and that will be a challenge for the PBKS franchise in the middle overs if the premier leg-spinner doesn’t improve his performance.

Arshdeep Singh was clinical with 2/36 in four overs. Vijaykumar Vyshak could come straight into the playing XI after a perfect execution of wide yorkers in the 14th and 16th overs to pull the game back in their favor.
